Protecting the Public by Protecting the Environment
HD-14 stretches along the Middle Rio Grande through the South Valley and downtown Albuquerque. Our families feel the impacts of climate change, drought, and pollution directly: in our water, our air, our utility bills, and our insurance premiums. Joseph Romero is running to make sure New Mexico meets this moment with the urgency our communities deserve.
Write our climate goals into law. Seven years after the state first committed to climate action, those goals still aren’t in statute, leaving them vulnerable to every change in administration. Joseph will fight to codify enforceable emissions reduction targets and lock in the clean energy progress that already powers nearly half of New Mexico’s electricity at rates below the national average.
Protect the Rio Grande and our groundwater. The Middle Rio Grande is in dire condition, snowpack has collapsed, and a groundwater crisis is bearing down on the entire state. Joseph supports stronger enforcement against water rights overuse, dedicated funding for acequia infrastructure, and the resources New Mexico needs to keep our water under New Mexico’s control as federal protections retreat.
Stand up to federal rollbacks. As Washington dismantles climate and clean air protections, New Mexico has to lead. Joseph will fully fund state environmental agencies, defend and strengthen state-level methane rules, and make sure New Mexico has the capacity to run its own water and air quality programs without depending on a federal government that has walked away.
Deliver environmental justice for the communities hit hardest. Extreme heat, drought, abandoned uranium mines, and hundreds of toxic contamination sites are not abstract problems in HD-14. They shape daily life along the river. Joseph will fight for cleanup funding and for policies that ensure working families and historically underserved communities don’t shoulder the costs of a crisis they didn’t create.
Protect conservation funding for the long haul. Joseph will defend the Conservation Legacy Permanent Fund as a lasting, predictable source of investment in conservation, climate resilience, and community health for generations to come.
Defend wildlife, rivers, and public lands. Joseph supports science-based wildlife management, environmental flows that keep our rivers alive, and stronger oversight of the agencies entrusted with protecting New Mexico’s biodiversity. Our land, water, and wildlife are not partisan issues. They are a responsibility to the place we call home.
Joseph Romero will fight for HD-14’s air, water, and future, every session, every vote.
