Where I Stand On The
Issues
Focused on the issues that matter to District 14
-
Affordability
Joseph Romero is running to give HD-14 a representative who fights to make life affordable at every stage of a family’s life. Working parents, educators, and students are stretched thin, and Joseph’s plan puts money back in their pockets by raising New Mexico’s minimum wage to a true living wage indexed to inflation and securing Paid Family Medical Leave so parents never have to choose between a paycheck and caring for a sick child.
Joseph will fight to increase the Child Tax Credit and expand the Working Families Tax Credit so low- and moderate-income parents keep more of what they earn, reduce grocery costs by supporting local growers and waiving permit fees for grocers in rural food deserts, and distribute Baby Bonds for every New Mexico newborn so the next generation has a real head start on college, a first home, or a small business.
-
Public Safety
Joseph Romero is running to give HD-14 a representative who fights for safer streets, safer schools, and safer neighborhoods. Every family in our district deserves to feel secure at home, at work, and on the way to school. Joseph’s plan backs the officers who keep us safe while holding the bad ones accountable, keeps violent offenders behind bars, clears the court backlog so victims get real answers, and goes after the fentanyl suppliers and human traffickers preying on New Mexico families.
At the same time, Joseph knows that lasting safety isn’t built on enforcement alone. His plan invests in the prevention, treatment, and accountability that actually work, from school-based mental health services and after-school mentorship for HD-14 kids, to Housing First for chronic homelessness, to a full overhaul of CYFD so no child slips through the cracks, to standing up to Trump’s ICE and protecting our neighborhoods from masked agents.

Reproductive Justice
Joseph Romero is proud to be endorsed by Planned Parenthood Votes New Mexico. Reproductive freedom is under attack like never before. Trump and his allies in Washington are waging war on abortion access, birth control, and the doctors and clinics that provide care, and they won’t stop until every American is forced to live by their rules. New Mexico has to be a firewall, and HD-14 deserves a Representative who will never back down.
As your Representative, Joseph will fight to keep abortion legal, safe, and covered by insurance in our state, including Medicaid. He’ll use state funds to backfill any federal cuts so providers like Planned Parenthood can keep their doors open no matter what Washington does, build a firewall around medical records so reproductive health data can never be weaponized against patients or providers, and pass strong shield laws so New Mexico never cooperates with out-of-state prosecutions. He’ll expand access to birth control and family planning, take on New Mexico’s maternal health crisis by investing in OB-GYNs, midwives, and doulas, guarantee every young person gets accurate, comprehensive sex education, and stand up for LGBTQ+ families and gender-affirming care. Every New Mexican, no matter their income, zip code, immigration status, or who they love, deserves the freedom to make their own decisions about their body, their family, and their future.

Healthcare
Healthcare in America is under siege. Trump is tearing Medicaid apart while premiums soar to record highs from coast to coast. If these Medicaid cuts go through, New Mexicans will pay the price with longer drives to see a doctor, weeks-long waits for appointments, and a crushing wave of medical debt for families who are already stretched thin. New Mexico has tried to fight back, stepping up to subsidize premiums and driving record enrollment in our Affordable Care Act marketplace. But we’re still battling a historic shortage of providers that leaves too many communities without the care they deserve.
As your Representative for House District 14, Joseph will fight to defend Medicaid from Trump’s attacks, push to recruit and retain the doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers our communities desperately need, fight for safe staffing laws that establish minimum doctor, nurse, and healthcare worker-to-patient ratios so frontline staff aren’t stretched past their limits and patients always get the attention they deserve, and make sure New Mexico never backs down when it comes to protecting the health of the people who call this state home. Equality
Joseph Romero believes equality is not a slogan, it is a responsibility. As an attorney who has represented LGBTQ clients and as a neighbor who has built a welcoming home for the LGBTQ family and friends in his life, Joseph will turn that commitment into action by leading with the community rather than for it, building formal channels with Equality New Mexico on every policy area where the community has a stake.
Joseph will protect personal data and privacy with no corporate carve-outs, tackle housing and addiction as connected crises with fully funded treatment and supportive housing, push back against private equity takeovers of healthcare and utilities, govern through an intersectional lens on every policy, and lead rather than follow so New Mexico sets the standard on civil rights.
-
Education
Joseph Romero is running to give HD-14 a representative whose work is centered on our schools, our educators, and our kids. After decades of leadership focused elsewhere, it’s time for a legislator who fights for Albuquerque classrooms every session, protecting local control, defending the historic teacher pay raises of the last eight years, and pushing for a $30,000 minimum salary for educational assistants and classified staff indexed to the Level I teacher salary.
Joseph opposes every voucher scheme and every effort to privatize school jobs, will defend the ERB pension and expand healthcare to higher ed workers left out, supports safe storage laws and school counselor funding while keeping ICE out of our schools, and will take on predatory student lenders and fight for the adjunct and classified workers who keep CNM and UNM running.
-
Environment
HD-14 stretches along the Middle Rio Grande through the South Valley and downtown Albuquerque, and our families feel climate change, drought, and pollution directly in our water, our air, our utility bills, and our insurance premiums. Joseph Romero is running to meet this moment by writing New Mexico’s climate goals into law, protecting the Rio Grande and our groundwater with stronger enforcement and acequia funding, and standing up to federal rollbacks by fully funding state environmental agencies.
Joseph will deliver environmental justice for the communities hit hardest by extreme heat, drought, abandoned uranium mines, and toxic contamination sites along the river, defend the Conservation Legacy Permanent Fund for generations to come, and protect wildlife, rivers, and public lands through science-based management and environmental flows.

Parks and Open Spaces
HD-14 is one of the most beautiful districts in New Mexico, and that is not an accident. It is the result of generations of families, neighbors, and stewards who fought to protect the green spaces that make this corner of Albuquerque feel like home. Parks, open areas, and outdoor spaces are not amenities. They are essential infrastructure. They give our kids a place to run, our seniors a place to walk, and our neighbors a place to gather. They get people moving, lower stress, ease the loneliness that has crept into too many of our lives, and pull our community closer together. A district with strong parks is a district with stronger schools, stronger health outcomes, and stronger bonds between the people who live here.
HD-14 is lucky enough to be home to the ABQ BioPark Zoo, Tingley Beach, and more than three miles of the Rio Grande Bosque, the cottonwood ribbon that has defined the South Valley and downtown Albuquerque for centuries. These are not just local landmarks. They are statewide treasures, and they deserve to be treated that way. Joseph Romero will fight to leverage New Mexico’s financial resources to protect, improve, and expand the parks and open spaces that make HD-14 worth coming home to. That means real state investment in the BioPark and Tingley, real funding to keep the Bosque healthy in the face of drought and fire, and real commitment to making sure every kid in HD-14, no matter their zip code, grows up with a park, a trail, or a riverbank within walking distance of their front door.
