Meet Joe Romero

Democrat for New Mexico House District 14

Veteran. Husband. Father. Fighter for Working Families.

About Joe

Joseph Romero is a lifelong New Mexican, attorney, and military veteran dedicated to serving his community. Born and raised in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Joseph has called House District 14 home since 2005, when he purchased his first home and began building his life in the district.

Joseph is a husband and the proud father of three children, ages 19, 13, and 11. His commitment to family and community guides everything he does.

He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of New Mexico in 2006 and his law degree from the UNM School of Law in 2010. Since then, Joseph has built a career advocating for everyday New Mexicans. In 2014, he opened his own law practice, where he has represented injured workers and people harmed by the negligence of others. His work focuses on fighting to ensure injured workers and others are treated fairly and receive the support they deserve.

Joseph’s commitment to service began in 1998 when he joined the military. He deployed to Iraq in 2004 with the New Mexico Air National Guard. In 2017, he became a Judge Advocate (JAG) with the New Mexico Army National Guard, where he served as a defense counsel representing soldiers and later as an Assistant Brigade Judge Advocate advising military leadership on complex legal matters. He retired from military service in 2023 after more than two decades of service to our country.

Joseph is running for the House District 14 seat to bring new opportunity to the district and deliver results for the families who live there. His priorities include growing the local economy and creating good-paying jobs, lowering the cost of groceries, utilities, and health care for working families, and strengthening hospital staffing standards so New Mexicans can count on timely access to doctors and quality care.

Through his legal work, military service, and deep roots in the community, Joseph Romero has built a life centered on service, integrity, and standing up for others.

The District He’s Fighting For

House District 14 is one of the most diverse districts in New Mexico, stretching across Barelas, parts of Downtown, the South Valley, the West Side, and the Country Club area. It’s home to the ABQ BioPark Zoo, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the South Broadway Cultural Center, Tingley Beach, and more than three miles of the Bosque.

HD-14 contains some of the oldest communities in Albuquerque, including Barelas and Huning Highlands — the city’s very first subdivision. It’s a district with deep roots and an engaged, organized population, home to twelve active neighborhood associations: ABQCore, Alamosa, Barelas, Crestview Bluff Neighbors Association, Huning Castle, Huning Highland Historic District Association, Los Altos Civic Association, Raynolds Addition, South Broadway, Stinson Tower, Vecinos Del Bosque, and West Park.

Joe is running to give every one of these neighborhoods a representative who will show up, listen, and fight.

Joe’s Priorities

Joe’s plan focuses on the issues that matter most to HD-14 families — putting money back in working people’s pockets, keeping our neighborhoods safe, and protecting the rights New Mexicans have fought to preserve.

Affordable Healthcare. Lower costs and expand access. No family should have to choose between seeing a doctor and paying their bills.

Affordability for Working Families. A true living wage indexed to inflation, Paid Family Medical Leave, an expanded Child Tax Credit and Working Families Tax Credit, and real action to bring down grocery costs.

Public Safety. Back our officers and hold the bad ones accountable. Get tough on violent crime, fix our courts, treat addiction, end chronic homelessness, and overhaul CYFD so no child slips through the cracks.

Reproductive Rights. Protect the reproductive freedoms New Mexico has fought hard to preserve.

World-Class Education. Leverage New Mexico’s wealth to build a best-in-nation educational system from early childhood through college, and support the educators who make it work.

Standing Up to ICE. HD-14 will not be a staging ground for federal overreach. Joe will fight for buffer zones around schools, churches, and clinics, and require federal agents operating in our neighborhoods to identify themselves.
